So you've decided to retire, leave your employer based health insurance and move to Medicare Coverage. Don't worry there are just a few steps to take.
First you will want to determine the last date you will be covered by your employer coverage.
Next you will need to enroll into Medicare the month prior to the month you will need coverage. For example if your last day of coverage is March 31st you will want to enroll in Medicare in the month of March so your Medicare coverage starts on April 1st. (Medicare Coverage always starts on the first day of the month).
There are 3 ways to enroll into Medicare
1. Over the phone by calling Social Security
2. Online. at ssa.gov
3. In-person at your local social security office.
Things to consider:
If you have already enrolled in Medicare part A and only need to enroll in part B you will need to complete form CMS40-B
Also you will need to let Medicare know that you had creditable employer coverage during the time between the month you were first eligible for Medicare and the Month you wish to start your part B coverage. You will need to have your employer complete CMS form L564. Once you have received the completed form from your employer submit both forms when applying for part B.
