The program is divided into four parts; A, B, C, and D.
Part A is hospital insurance and covers inpatient services, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and home health care. Part B is medical insurance and covers outpatient services, doctors’ services, medical supplies, and preventive care. Part A and B together make up what’s known as Original Medicare.
Part C, or Medicare Advantage, provides the same coverage as both Part A and Part B but includes additional coverage as well, such as prescription drug, dental, vision, and hearing coverage. This makes Part C an all-in-one alternative to Part A and B.
Part D is the prescription drug coverage plan. With Original Medicare, you can purchase Part D as a standalone plan. Or, you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan that provides prescription drug coverage.
Another part of Medicare includes Medicare Supplements, or Medigap. These plans take care of the out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare. You can choose from one of ten plans: A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. Each plan offers a specific range of coverage that tailors to the coverage needs of almost all Medicare beneficiaries.
However, you can only enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan if you have Medicare Part A and B. You cannot have a supplement plan with Medicare Advantage.
